Trenton Water Works Risk & Resilience Analysis

What was the Challenge?

Trenton Water Works (TWW) is scheduled to remove its open finished water Pennington Reservoir to comply with EPA requirements.  The reservoir is scheduled to be removed in July of 2023, upon which the total system storage will be reduced.  In order to provide uninterrupted service to its customers, the system will need to operate in a more reliable manner due to less storage buffer to accommodate treatment facility interruptions or other outages. B&L was tasked to deliver expertise analysis of the water treatment plant (WTP) in order identify risk and resilience related to the reservoir project.

How did Barton & Loguidice provide a solution?

Barton & Loguidice (B&L) has an established relationship with TWW which provides Asset Management and Program Assistance services. The collaborative approach between B&L and TWW operators and staff was to evaluate each step of the water treatment process and key distribution system components to identify risk and improvements for greater resilience.  B&L visited TWW and met weekly to talk through the WTP process to determine the equipment, as a part of treatment process, and other conditions that would have an impact on the WTP’s ability to meet demands.

Why was the project a success?

B&L prepared the risk and resilience analysis document in short period of time so TWW could comply with EPA milestones. The results in the document are a narrow list of events and processes that were deemed critical to WTP operations. For each critical event and/or process a recommendation was made to increase the WTP and distribution system resiliency and prevent negative impacts on City customers.
