Maria Regina High School Synthetic Turf Field

What was the challenge?

The challenge was converting Maria Regina High School’s existing grass soccer and softball fields into a new multi-purpose synthetic turf field incorporating soccer and an overlapping softball field and striping for a synthetic turf running track straightaway.

How did Barton & Loguidice provide a solution?

Converting a natural grass field into a multi-sport synthetic turf field involves several steps to ensure a successful transition. B&L’s process included a comprehensive site inventory and analysis to ensure the suitability and feasibility of converting the natural grass fields to a multi-purpose synthetic turf field. The analysis phase included the assessment of the existing natural grass fields, including size (existing and required), soil composition, drainage patterns and capabilities, topography, existing infrastructure, and regulatory and permit requirements.

B&L’s design solution included extensive earthwork and the incorporation of a large modular block retaining wall to enlarge the field to allow for full-size soccer and softball fields and a reconfiguration of the existing parking lot to accommodate the larger field and provide more parking spaces. Due to the limited size of the project area, subsurface storage chambers were included in the stormwater management design to efficiently capture and control water runoff, preserving the integrity of the field’s surface and ensuring optimal drainage during heavy rainfall.

Why was the project a success?

This project was a success as this conversion from natural grass fields to a multi-sport synthetic turf field not only offers a resilient and versatile playing surface but also requires reduced maintenance compared to natural grass, making it an excellent long-term solution for the school’s athletic program. The project also included the additional site amenities of spectator seating, accessible walkways, a relocated scoreboard, new fencing, and site landscaping. This project was completed, and the field was opened for use by the School in August 2023.
