County Route 21 Bridge over Gulf Stream
What Was the Challenge?
Originally built in 1933, the existing steel girder bridge was deteriorating, too narrow, and structurally compromised. The bridge is the most direct route for homes and other destinations to the north, and was used heavily by residents, businesses, and the local Highway Department.
How Did Barton & Loguidice Provide a Solution?
The new 108-foot-long bridge, designed by B&L, features a prestressed concrete bulb tee beam superstructure and semi-integral abutments on bedrock, ensuring long-term resilience. Funded through the BridgeNY program, the project prioritized minimizing waste, reducing streambed impact, and incorporating durable materials. Access for nearby residents and businesses was maintained at all times during construction.
Why Was This Project a Success?
This project transformed a deteriorating structure into a modern, sustainable asset that will serve the community for years to come. The new structure offers improved safety and efficiency for daily travel, while also ensuring long-term resilience for the roadway. It has improved both traffic safety and water flow beneath the road.
