Erie Boulevard Roundabout

What was the Challenge?

The signalized intersection at Erie Boulevard and Nott Street had a history of a high volume of accidents that was 5.4 times the statewide average. That, combined with a poor level of service and congestion that created back-ups through adjacent intersections, prompted the City of Schenectady to identify this intersection as a high priority project. The city received funding through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program. The objectives of this project included improving traffic efficiency and air quality, providing safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists, improving connectivity to the north end of Schenectady, and providing drainage and utility improvements.

How did Barton & Loguidice provide a solution?

A two-lane roundabout was constructed to improve both the function and safety of the intersection. A roundabout in this location could reduce carbon monoxide emissions by 29% and nitrogen oxide emissions by 21%. Other benefits to building a roundabout included improved pedestrian and bicyclist safety, improved intersection drainage, reduced traffic congestion along Erie Boulevard, traffic calming, and an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a standard four-way intersection.

Why was the project a success?

The city’s first roundabout has helped spark the transformation of the northern entrance to the City of Schenectady in coordination with the adjacent Rivers Casino and Mohawk Harbor Development as the city’s long-range plan continues to be implemented. The project has also led to improved air quality, a reduction in vehicular accidents at the intersection, and an improved vehicular level of service.
