Village of Mohawk Substation Replacement
What was the challenge?
The electrical substation was located at the northern end of North Richfield Street in the Village of Mohawk along the Mohawk River. The substation was located adjacent to Route 5S and is close to where Fulmer Creek empties into the Mohawk River. The facility was inundated with water during the summer 2013 flooding. This project relocates the substation to a higher elevation and thus will protect it from future flooding.
How did Barton & Loguidice provide a solution?
Barton & Loguidice visited the site to confirm the locations and alignments of the various utilities, using, visual observations, surveys, and information with interviews with the Village staff and National Grid staff. As the site is located along the old Erie Canal a Phase 1 Archaeological Survey was provided. This site work was critical to determine the location and arrangement of the new substation including routing of new electrical feeders and temporary connection locations.
Why was the project a success?
The final design consists of a new substation building with two 7.5MVA transformers, five -46kV air switches, fused cut-outs, dual metering, indoor 5kV switchgear, 400 kW natural gas fueled backup generator, site lighting, and ancillary equipment required to operate the Village’s electrical substation. The new building and equipment are being installed at an elevation of 396 feet which is two feet above the 100-year flood elevation and approximately 8 feet above the current substation.
